Jaw problems

Despite the potential benefits, there are also drawbacks to excessive gum chewing. One concern is the impact it can have on the jaw joint and muscles. Continuous chewing puts strain on these areas, which can lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder or exacerbate existing TMJ issues. Symptoms may include jaw pain, headaches, and difficulty in opening or closing the mouth properly. It is important to be mindful of the frequency and intensity of gum chewing to avoid these potential problems.

Headaches and migraines

On the other hand, some individuals may experience negative side effects from chewing gum, particularly related to headaches and migraines. The constant jaw movement and the prolonged exposure to artificial sweeteners or flavorings can trigger headaches in susceptible individuals. Additionally, the excessive chewing motion itself can strain the muscles and joints in the head and neck area, leading to tension headaches or migraines. It is essential to be aware of these potential risks, especially for those prone to headaches.
