Causes
The primary cause of Klinefelter syndrome is the presence of an extra X chromosome, resulting in the XXY chromosomal pattern. This additional genetic material can lead to a range of developmental and physical differences in affected individuals. The error in cell division that leads to the presence of an extra X chromosome is not inherited from the parents and occurs randomly.
While the exact reason for this error is not fully understood, advanced maternal age has been identified as a potential risk factor for the occurrence of Klinefelter syndrome.
