Foods that may contribute to cancer
While certain foods have the potential to protect against cancer, there are also foods that may increase the risk of developing the disease. It’s important to be mindful of our intake of the following foods:
1. Processed meats: Bacon, sausage, and deli meats are high in sodium, nitrates, and other additives that have been linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer.
2. Hot beverages: Consuming very hot beverages, such as hot tea or coffee, has been associated with an increased risk of esophageal cancer.
3. Overcooked/burnt food: Overcooking or charring foods can create harmful compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which may increase the risk of certain cancers.
4. Alcoholic beverages: Excessive alcohol consumption has been shown to increase the risk of several types of cancer, including breast, liver, and colorectal cancer.
5. Dairy: Some studies suggest that high intake of dairy products, particularly milk, may be associated with an increased risk of prostate and ovarian cancer.
6. Refined carbohydrates/sugars: Diets high in refined carbohydrates and sugars have been linked to obesity and may increase the risk of certain cancers, such as colorectal cancer.
7. Red meat: While moderate consumption of lean red meat can be part of a healthy diet, high intake of processed and red meat has been associated with an increased risk of colorectal and stomach cancer.
